Dr. Timothy Jones
Hello, I’m Dr. Timothy Jones, MD. I believe that my job is to empower patients to make informed decisions that lead to a happier, healthier life.
For over 20 years, I worked as an ER doctor and saw the same patients return again and again with the same chronic problems. They’d come in with long lists of medications. We’d treat their symptoms and CAT scan them, but the majority of the time, their results would be normal. We’d send them to specialists who would say there was nothing wrong. The patients would be prescribed more medication and sent home.
I thought there must be a better way to help people, but I didn’t know what it was.
In 2012, I began learning about functional medicine. Actually, it was my wife Jean who introduced me to it. As a certified health coach, she’d become very interested in functional medicine and its benefits, and I accompanied her to a talk, really just to be supportive.
We heard these inspiring stories about people who were able to get off a long list of medications just by changing their lifestyle and diet. I thought, “Gee, maybe we can help people make big changes in their health.
At this time, I was also running a medical concierge practice, serving patients who were too ill to get to the hospital. I began using a functional medicine approach with these patients and saw staggering results.
One patient, a woman with MS, was able to stop her medications for diabetes and blood pressure just by changing her diet. The MS left her bed-bound, but she had significantly less joint pain, greater range of movement, and, most importantly, a better quality of life.
My Wake-up Call
Seeing the impact that functional medicine had on my patients was rewarding, but there was a bigger lesson in store for me.
A few years ago, I noticed I was gaining more weight and not feeling like myself. Because I’m a Type 1 diabetic, I sought out an expert endocrinologist, hoping to figure out what was going on in my body. I found a doctor who was supposed to be the best in his field, and I drove almost two hours to see him. He told me I had to take more insulin, but I knew that the insulin was what was making me gain the weight. I didn’t want to just handle my disease—I wanted to gain back my health. My desire for a solution fell on deaf ears.
That’s when I realized that the way we practice medicine has to change. We have to take patients’ needs and wants into the equation. We have to invite them to be partners in their own health.
A New Path
This story has two happy endings. The first is that I found a doctor with a more integrative approach who helped me change the way I was eating, and soon I was able to lose the extra weight and feel like my old self again.
The even happier ending is that I became committed to changing what’s possible in patient care. Jean and I decided to found our own functional medicine practice so that all of our patients would feel heard, seen, and empowered to regain their health.
I’m so grateful that my wife Jean helped me see a new possibility. Together, we look forward to helping you walk this path with us, the Path of Life.
